Practical notes

Before the phone leaves the UK

Separate roaming, overseas calling and travel eSIM use.

Check the exact destination

Read the provider entry for the country and your specific tariff. Nearby islands or territories can have different treatment. A European destination is not automatically included in every provider’s zone.

Read the limits

Identify fair-use data, duration limits, daily passes, excluded number types and what triggers a charge. Unlimited domestic data may have a smaller roaming allowance.

Protect the settings

Download maps on Wi-Fi, review background updates and check spend controls. For a travel eSIM, select the correct data line and inspect whether the UK line can still incur charges. Turning off data roaming does not stop every possible voice or message charge.

Ships, aircraft and borders

Maritime and satellite connections can fall outside ordinary land roaming. Near a border, a phone may attach to a neighbouring country’s network. Review the network name and follow the provider’s guidance.

Before you act
