Practical notes

Make sense of an unfamiliar bill

Read the bill line by line before assuming the headline total is wrong.

Establish the period

Check the dates covered and whether a first or changed bill includes a partial period. Look separately at recurring airtime, device payments, extra use and subscriptions.

Find the unexpected category

Premium numbers, international calls, roaming, picture messages and third-party subscriptions can be outside the normal allowance. The account’s usage record is more useful than a phone’s estimate for a billing dispute.

Challenge with evidence

Make a note of the exact line, date and reason for questioning it. Contact official billing support and keep the reference. Never give us card details or a verification code; we cannot see or amend the account.

If paying is difficult

Contact the provider early about support and affordable options. Do not simply cancel a Direct Debit while the service remains active. Get any arrangement in writing and use independent debt advice if needed.

Before you act

Confirm current details directly with the official provider. Our information is independent, general and free of a guidance fee. We do not sell or arrange services.
