Practical notes

Mobile broadband or a fixed connection?

Match the connection to the household’s actual use.

Mobile broadband uses a radio signal and a router or hotspot. Fixed broadband uses an address-based line or fibre connection. Coverage and availability must be checked using the correct service tools.

Test the right things

Consider indoor signal, router position, latency, upload needs, video calls and simultaneous users. A phone speed test is a useful indication, not a promise for a different router or service.

Read the service rules

Check minimum term, permitted usage, equipment return, fair use and any traffic or speed restrictions. An unlimited phone plan is not automatically suitable as a permanent household connection.

Keeping other services working

Think about home phone, alarms or telecare equipment and what happens during a power cut. Ask the relevant provider or equipment supplier about compatibility before changing the household connection.
